Diabetes is the second leading cause of liver failure and transplant in India. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the way the body metabolizes sugar. Liver cancer and liver failure are rampant in people with diabetes, making monitoring of this disease all the more important.

Having liver disease can also trigger diabetes and worsen liver function.

“Your risk of having metabolic syndrome X – including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, obesity, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels – is higher if you’ve ever had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,” says Dr. Patankar.


How to take care of your liver when you have diabetes

* Manage your blood sugar by eating nutritious foods and avoiding junk foods, processed and canned sugary foods.

* Limit consumption of colas, sodas, juices, sweets, baked goods and candies.

* Eat at regular intervals in the amount recommended by the expert.

* Whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables should be part of your daily diet, exercise every day for about half an hour.

* You can do activities such as swimming, cycling, yoga, gym, aerobics, running or jogging.

* Reduce your sodium and caffeine intake to control high blood pressure. Say NO to tobacco and alcohol. Get tested as suggested by the doctor for liver disease.
