There are a lot of factors in staying healthy during the holiday season. These can include the increased cold and flu season during the winter months, nutrition during the holidays, exercise at home, and the stress of making plans.

It is important that during the season students know how to maintain good health. Mary Bennett, Principal of the WKU School of Nursing and Allied Health, gave advice on some ways for students to stay safe and healthy during the holiday season.

“To avoid [illnesses] to start. It is quite possible to avoid people when you are sick and to avoid people who are sick, ”Bennett said. “Of course, wash your hands thoroughly and don’t touch the face and nose areas. Don’t share food and drink with others, and don’t let anyone else drink from your glass. These are the basic things that have to do with staying healthy.

She also discussed how best to manage nutrition during the holidays, when many families have different large holiday meals.

“There’s a lot of food around, and that doesn’t mean you should deprive yourself of your favorite treats, just calm down. Think ahead of time about what you really want, ”Bennett said. “Moderation is the key to everything. Be aware that you don’t want to make yourself sick, you don’t want to feel bad after eating. Judge what you really really want and make room for it.

Exercise is something that also promotes bodily wellness, but it can be difficult for students off campus.

“It just depends on your home environment. For most of us, we can find a way to go up and down the stairs, or try to walk outside if it’s not too cold, ”Bennett said. “[Thanksgiving is] a short break, so as not to completely lose shape being far from campus. But for the longer winter vacation, if you’ve got a gym membership or something, now’s a good time to take advantage.

Mental health is also something to take care of while on vacation, despite the fact that many don’t associate it with staying healthy. It can be difficult to be around those who can cause stress while on vacation.

“We look at the holiday season in particular because it sometimes shows who you get along with and who you don’t get along with,” Bennett said. “Think ahead of time who you’re going to be around and ask, ‘How am I going to deal with these people being there.’ “

She explained how difficult it can be for some students during the holidays due to difficulties with loved ones.

“Know that the holidays are more stressful because of the loved ones. Give yourself an excuse if you think “this would do me more harm than good,” Bennett said. “These are things that as an adult you think about, judge what life events I want to go to and which I would rather skip.”

Bennett also emphasized the overall importance of the holiday season and school vacation to our health as a whole. This free time allows us to recover before the spring semester and to take on new healthy habits.
