Study shows how exposure to smoke could influence sleep in adults in early life stages

Symptoms of sleep disorders are a common problem, and medical experts are constantly reviewing research to fill knowledge gaps. With an estimated 50-70 million adults suffering from sleep disorders, more information needs to be available to aid in the prevention and treatment of people with insomnia or other sleep-related disorders.

One such study recently published in Scientific reports suggests that prenatal exposure to nicotine and its by-products may produce long-term effects on sleep and stress response in certain areas of the brain. Using an animal model, the researchers were able to show how adult sleep can be influenced by events that occur during the early stages of life.

By exposing pregnant mice to nicotine and its by-products in the concentration of passive cigarette smoke, the researchers observed that their offspring, as adults, exhibited significant sleep problems. Most of these results were found between rest and activity, which corresponds to early morning awakening in humans.

The researchers also found altered expression of glucocorticoid receptors (stress hormones) in the hippocampus. This structure is most sensitive to stress during brain development.

This study revealed two important points for the analysis of sleep disorders. First, exposure to nicotine and its byproducts in the early stages of life can alter the expression and balance of corticosteroid receptors in the hippocampus. And second, the expression of glucocorticoids in the hippocampus is linked to reduced sleep.

Sleep problems are common

Sleep problems are becoming a widespread problem in the adult population, so understanding the root cause is key to taking preventative measures. A healthy, balanced lifestyle can help those who suffer from insomnia or other sleep disorders.

Sleep Sure Plus is designed to help with sleep and rest. Its unique formula includes some of the best ingredients known to promote healthy, restful sleep.
