The researchers also found altered expression of glucocorticoid receptors (stress hormones) in the hippocampus. This structure is most sensitive to stress during brain development.
This study revealed two important points for the analysis of sleep disorders. First, exposure to nicotine and its byproducts in the early stages of life can alter the expression and balance of corticosteroid receptors in the hippocampus. And second, the expression of glucocorticoids in the hippocampus is linked to reduced sleep.
