Ponca City – (November 4, 2021) – November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Shape Your Future, a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), provides Oklahoma residents with tools and advice to fight diabetes, one of the leading killers in the United States.

Over the past 20 years, the rate of Oklahomians living with diabetes has tripled. This chronic disease affects more than 330,000 people in the state every day, and Oklahoma has the 5th highest diabetes death rate in the country.

“Making just one healthy change, like drinking one less sugary drink a day, is a great first step towards living without diabetes,” said Jenny Creech, TSET Healthy Living Program Coordinator with Kay County Service. “Swapping fatty, high-calorie foods for fresh, healthy foods is also very helpful. “

Small changes like being more aware of the food you eat are just one way to lower your risk. Not smoking, getting enough sleep every night, and increasing your daily physical activity are all effective measures to reduce the risk of diabetes in your life.

Type 2 diabetes is most commonly seen in inactive and overweight adults and children. This form of diabetes occurs when your body cannot properly produce insulin to support you in the best possible way.
