When keeping in touch with her children was too difficult, mom Megan Christensen took a look at her health.

At the time, she weighed 160 kg and this prevented her from enjoying activities with her children.

“I have been overweight my whole life. It really got out of hand after having kids, ”the 37-year-old from Windsor, Connecticut told NBC’s TODAY.

“Being a parent at 350 pounds (160 kg), there are so many things you can’t do like climb the stairs or go for a walk or go to the amusement park.”

This encouraged her to make several small changes.

At first, she looked at the foods she was eating.

“For the first six months, I focused 100% on nutrition, watching the calories I ate,” explained Christensen.

“The calories I ate – that was a lot of processed foods. It was a lot of carbs.

Making small changes to her diet had a big impact.

In just six months, she lost 45 kg.

But keeping him away seemed like a different challenge.

“I had to do something different to maintain this weight loss,” Christensen said.

“All of the research I’ve done suggests that people who are successful in maintaining their weight loss focus on strength training.”

So Christensen hired an online fitness coach and focused on exercise goals, including helping her improve her cardiovascular health and get stronger.

Soon she found herself running. Again, she started out small which helped build her stamina.

“Run the 5k the 10k, then run the half marathon and keep building that strength,” she said.

In 15 months, she lost more than 90kg, going from 160kg to 66kg.

While Christensen loves that she can run long distances and be stronger, the real joy comes from what she can do with her family.

“Things like going on vacation with my kids and ziplining for the first time because I was finally under the weight limit or roller skating with my son, focusing on those things and those milestones really went downhill. helped keep the momentum going, ”she said. noted.

After losing so much weight, she no longer felt indebted to the scales.

“The funny thing that happens is when you hit your target weight you have this moment where you say, ‘So what now? “she said.

“The scale was not going to be the thing to dictate my life anymore.

“I actually took him to a smash room and smashed him.

And that, to me, symbolizes exceeding goals associated with number and goals associated with what my body could accomplish.

While wanting to be active and engaged with her family kept her motivated, losing so much weight meant she had excess skin that no amount of lifting could firm.

Christensen decided to have skin removal surgery.

Recovery was difficult, especially because she couldn’t exercise as hard as she wanted.

But her doctor said she could walk as far as she could. So she laced up her shoes and started.

“I said, ‘Okay. Challenge accepted, ”she said.

“My friend Karen is coming and we are going for a walk together. Such liberation being in the wild and just having the challenge of the hills and we held ourselves accountable even on the days that weren’t so great. Before I knew it, I was at 10, 15 miles a day.

Christensen hopes his success will help others see their own potential.

“I had convinced myself that I was just supposed to be overweight and I think we tend as a culture to look at these before and after photos of the post and really fall in love with the girl on the right, the girl. to the photo post, ”she said.

“If you are sitting there as the person who is the front photo right now, know that you already have everything in you to be successful.

“Just kiss it and hold on to it.”
