Training doctors may seem particularly difficult in the context of professional training, but it has a lot in common with the way business leaders are trained. A new manual brings together capital development expertise and thought leadership to target key issues at every tenuous transition point in medical education.
AMAs Facilitate effective transitions along the continuum of medical education The manual examines the needs of learners across the continuum of medical education, from the start of medical school to the final stage of residency. This is the latest publication from the medical experts who are part of the AMA Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium.
Learner Sections help medical students and residents acclimate to the diverse contexts and expectations of the medical education environment. Faculty sections then provide plans for transition programs, as well as resources to help students and residents deal with the challenges of transitions. Download the manual now.
“There are comparisons that can be drawn between learners transitioning across the medical education continuum and corporate executives transitioning into new roles,” notes the introduction. “The need to ‘take the lead’, to perform in high-stakes environments, to lead and function within a high-performing team, and to execute critical decision-making that impacts the lives of many people are common elements between a doctor in training and a business leader in transition to a new role.
The handbook captures the perspectives of learners across the continuum of medical education, as well as medical and doctoral faculty, gathered in focus group interviews facilitated by executive leadership experts from Odgers Berndtson, a global leadership consultancy.
The guidelines in the manual are broken down into four stages of transition: medical school, clerkship, residency, and the role of senior resident. Focused on success, personal identity and building skills, it describes how to maintain well-being by embracing outside interests and learning to share burdens with others.
Each step is explored through lessons in the following areas.
Thumbnails. These show some of the ways things can go wrong and how to react when they do.
Job Description. During the transition to medical school, for example, “learners work primarily in a classroom setting, similar to previous educational experiences. However, learners also begin to develop a professional identity and become members of the healthcare team, both in the classroom and in the wider community. »
Differences between stages. This can include changes in workload, application of knowledge and skills, personal responsibilities, and growth mindset.
Main stakeholder groups. These can be peers, patients, family and friends, as well as residents, treating physicians and other members of the health care team.
Success criteria. Students should know their patients and the medical, psychosocial, and systemic issues with their patients, as well as be able to succinctly present handbook notes on transitioning to clerkship. “It demonstrates the integration of knowledge and recognition of what is important.”
Commonly encountered problems. These include burnout and disorganization outside of work, including in resident and student finances. The manual also offers solutions.
Desired results. For example, “the first-year resident should focus on gradually developing the skill set for the next stage of their training by anticipating potential problems, formulating contingency plans, triaging patients appropriately , managing a wide range of medical emergencies and educating others while staying healthy. well-being in all aspects of their daily lives.
Each learner-led chapter is followed by a corresponding faculty guide with advice on how to design two programs that enhance the educational experience and boost learner performance.
Following the chapter on the transition to medical school, for example, the faculty guide explores the steps that faculty or programs should take to help students meet the criteria for success.
