BOSTON (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi threw a seven-hitter for his first full career game, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Saturday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.
The Red Sox recorded their eighth win in 10 games after blowing two six-point leads in a Friday night loss. The game was tied at 3 before knocking Bobby Dalbec’s home run down in the sixth inning.
Rafael Devers hit four singles for Boston and Kiké Hernández added a two-run single.
Robinson Chirinos had a two-point shot for Baltimore. The Orioles have lost three of four.
Eovaldi (2-2) threw 108 shots in his 211th major league start. The 32-year-old right-hander allowed two earned runs, struck out six and walked one.
That’s the most starts before pitching a full game in MLB history, according to STATISTICS.
“It definitely means a lot to me,” Eovaldi said. “Especially with the way the game is changing now and things like that, and the injuries I’ve had.”
Eovaldi had Tommy John surgery twice – once in high school and again in 2016 – and was sidelined in 2019 after having “loose bodies” removed in his elbow a year earlier.
“Every starter wants to go out there and finish their start,” he said. “It means a lot to me.”
There were cheers when he trotted for ninth with the rarity of full games in baseball.
Boston’s bullpen was scored for 10 runs on Friday.
“He was great, especially in the second half of the game,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “We had to reset (the bullpen) at some point.”
Cora didn’t know it was Eovaldi’s first full game until it was over.
“It was good to see them celebrate it (at the clubhouse), well deserved,” Cora said.
Dalbec, who came in batting just .162 after wasting most of his playing time at first base against Franchy Cordero, threw a fastball into the Boston bullpen against Keegan Akin (1-1).
Less than 12 hours after erasing a six-run deficit by beating the Red Sox 10-0 in the final three innings, the Orioles tied it at 3 in the fifth when Chirinos hit a dangling curveball from Eovaldi on the Monster green.
The Red Sox had erased a 1-0 first hole when Jackie Bradley Jr. lined up a brace and Hernández followed with his single that sank into the shallow left of third baseman Ramón Urías’ glove.
Orioles starter Jordan Lyles allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Orioles: A day after saying 24-year-old INF prospect Jahmai Jones had season-ending surgery at Tommy John, they slated him for assignment and called RHP Cody Sedlock.
Red Sox: Placed RHP Hansel Robles on the 15-day injured list with back spasms.
In addition to Robles in IL, the Red Sox demoted right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura to Triple-A Worcester and recalled right-handers Ryan Brasier and Phillips Valdez.
Baltimore’s Rougned Odor went 0 for 4, ending his career-best 11-game hitting streak.
For the nightcap, Orioles right-hander Denyi Reyes (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is set to make his first major league start and second appearance against Boston right-hander Josh Winckowski, who is set to make his league debut. majors.
